Supporting Companies

Multisector Participation

The Low Carbon Soybean Program adopts a sectoral innovation model and partners with seven supporting companies: Bayer, Bunge, Cargill, Coamo, Cocamar, GDM, and UPL. The development of the LCS seal signals Brazil's intention to improve sustainability aspects further. With this differentiation, possibilities for adding value to low carbon soybean are opened, such as payment for environmental services, access to financing with lower interest rates, and entry into more restrictive markets among other opportunities.

Support from Experts and the Market

LCSP was structured based on two parallel and integrated approaches. The first aligns with the premises of the project’s technological route, involving requirements to quantify GHG reductions in the production systems with soybeans, among other issues. The other approach sought to capture the market insights and value-added opportunities for producers.

Therefore, public-private partnerships were established with various stakeholders in the soybean production chain, including cooperatives, grain traders, genetics, chemical, and bio-input industries. In this context, the Low Carbon Soybean Program adopted a model that relies on partnerships with seven supporting companies: Bayer, Bunge, Cargill, Coamo, Cocamar, GDM, and UPL.

In addition to funding the implementation of actions necessary for building and promoting the brand, partners contribute with market insights and value-added opportunities for producers.

The Program conducted numerous technical workshops involving approximately 70 scientists from 16 Embrapa research centers. These workshops identified relevant themes and technical challenges for developing technical guidelines for the Program. Also, workshops were held with supporting companies to identify market-related issues and opportunities for the low carbon soybean products.

Based on this mapped information, the program defined the technical guidelines in 2023, and during the 2023/24 harvest season, it began the field validation process of the protocol. The guidelines outline "what should be measured and evaluated," meaning what candidate areas need to adopt to obtain the SBC seal.
